Round 2 of the Innovation Fund was designed to target those geographical areas which suffer from seasonal hunger (“Monga”), and to tackle the root causes of income, food and employment insecurity arising from this seasonality. With the goal of launching innovative approaches to tackling extreme poverty among households affected by seasonal hunger, the round provided funding to 6 NGOs with an operational presence in the Monga-prone districts of North-West Bangladesh: Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Kurigram, Jaipurhat, Thakurgaon, Bogra, Panchaghar, Dinajpur and Nilphamari. Examples of supported innovations include using by-products of livestock rearing to generate biogas, artificial insemination and oestrous synchronisation of heifers to ensure milk during the lean season, and crop diversification for improved nutritional status.
